"Painting is a mysterious process, hovering between a thought and a thing" - Arthur Maderson
As a landscape painter, the transient effects of light in Nature are very alluring to me. The more I look and try to represent what I am experiencing, the more the landscape seems to become a symbol for other underlying stories.
I work mainly in oil paint on canvas or board, and sometimes waterbased media. I also enjoy working with other subjects - Still Life for example - but I am inevitably drawn back to the landscape, where I find endless possibilities for exploration and expression.
Working outside as much as possible, the 'plein air' approach is essential to my process.I try to record my initial responses to something while it is fresh and compelling. I often, but not always, continue to develop and refine the work in the studio.
