Painting Still Life gives me an opportunity to experiment and explore the limits of my chosen medium in a very controlled way. It’s a serious learning process and has been the pursuit of many a painter for centuries.

I usually select objects I love for their shape, colour, pattern, surface qualities, or personal association. I spend quite a lot of time setting up and lighting the ‘scene’ knowing that everything will still be as it was when I look away or take a tea break.

In this way I can hone my technical skills, explore a particular palette, play with different compositions and so on.  I end up with something that has taught me a lot and looks quite good on the kitchen wall!
