Landscape

Small things in the landscape move me – little glimmers of light and ambiguous shadows – as Nature gives each pocket of the landscape its moment of glory, then casts a shroud. Sometimes the stage seems set for an epic drama!

I use a variety of strategies to try to express this in my paintings, starting with drawings, painted studies, notes and photos on site, while I’m ‘in the moment’.

Back in the studio, this all feeds into a more organic process of experimentation, and it is at this stage that I often find myself taking a different direction to the one I’d planned, as the painting takes on a life of its own and seems to demand other solutions. I stop when I feel I can do no more, or to do so would seem like a backward step. Sometimes I start over again.

I always aim to convey a sense of being there.
